Ray Lamontagne Washington Concert reviews
A treasure
My ninth show with Ray since 2006. A reluctant star, there are times when you can feel his discomfort at the attention a live performance brings.
This show, he seemed more at ease, a bit more relaxed.
I noticed some annoyance at the gentleman behind me acting like it was a bar gig, calling out random comments. Sir, if you’re reading this, your white male privilege was showing. You may be able to buy a $45k watch, but you didn’t buy any class, apparently. Ray visibly grimaced at his band with a number of your outbursts.
Musically, Ray was spot on. The building acoustics were phenomenal. Heavy on newer stuff, which was to be expected on a tour labeled for the newest album. With 18 years of major label, it can be challenging to cover all the eras.
I feel like Ray and I have grown into middle age together. I am eternally grateful for the ways he’s touched my life. I’ll buy the ticket and take the ride with him for the rest of my days.
Magical! What an amazing night of music!!
Sierra Ferrell opened, and completely captured our hearts! She was fun and quirky, and her voice was so powerful and beautiful! We would definitely go and see her again as a main act! And when Ray took the stage, it was absolutely magical!! Singing and playing live is clearly not just a performance for him. He's one of those singers whose sincerity and vulnerability, if you're fully present, will draw you in and connect you in a deeply spiritual way. The way he plays the guitar is like a dance: effortless, graceful, intentional, and delicate all at once. His two bandmates, who were right in sync with him, filled the remaining space like they were a quartet. The bass player sometimes playing kick and snare on a cajon, while the virtuoso of a drummer switched to keys or strings. We were enraptured! So much so, that we didn't get distracted by the unusual amount of people walking in front of us to leave or return to their seats (sometimes in the middle of a song) so frequently, that it looked like some comically failed line dance; or the girls who were behind us gabbing and laughing loudly, as if the auditorium were a Starbucks. We were so "tuned in" to what Ray was doing, that we barely noticed it at all. He was THAT GOOD!! Would have been five stars without the inconsiderate people. Will will, without a doubt, be seeing him again!
